An investigation reveals that over the last 6 years there were more than 1,500 people in Australian psychiatric wards who were reportedly harassed or sexually assaulted. For decades it has been know that mixed wards put children and adults at risk of assault including sexual assault. Combined male and female psychiatric wards must be eliminated. Another area of grave concern is that not one of Australia’s Mental Health Acts ensures that children are not put into wards with adults, placing children at risk of harm. Every state and territory law must be changed to prevent children from being placed in wards with adults.
