
Despite decades of soaring expenditure with mental health funding hitting $14.5 billion annually and inquiry after inquiry our Australian mental health system has not improved. Noone questions that people do have problems, sometimes severe but if the mental health programs were effective then this would be evidenced by the number of people seeking help reducing. People are not receiving scientific, effective and proven help that returns them to happier and healthier lives. Professor Steven Schwartz from the Centre for Independent Studies asks the question, is the Australian mental health making people sicker? He stated, “We’re spending more, but outcomes keep getting worse.” And “In most areas of medicine, more effective care leads to better outcomes; mental health appears to be an exception, and that alone demands explanation.”
